Response to Letter to Editor on publication: “Mandibular condylectomy with osteoarthrectomy with and without temporalis muscle transfer”

We thank the authors of the letter for their comments on our paper. They start by referring to two review papers, both of which are well-written and interesting.
      • Sidebottom A.J.
      • Salha R.
Management of temporomandibular joint in rheumatoid disorders.

Pathogenesis of post-traumatic ankylosis of the temporomandibular joint: a critical review.
However, neither gives any published follow-up data and are therefore difficult to assess. The third paper, by Guven,
      • Guven O.
A clinical study on temporomandibular joining ankylosis in children.
is a small follow-up study of 14 children (mean age 7 years) in whom joint prosthesis has been compared with gap arthroplasty. The cause of the ankylosis was trauma in all but one. The results were no better for those given a prosthetic joint than for those treated by gap arthroplasty alone. Interestingly, Guven writes in his conclusion that “Total TMJ prosthesis and costochondral grafts may disturb the ramus growth”. One might also wonder how many times the prosthesis has to be replaced during the patient's lifetime. No data have been published as yet on this.
