Three-dimensional (stereolithographic) printing and patient-specific cutting guides have been used extensively in oral and maxillofacial surgery, particularly in orthognathic and reconstructive procedures. Since they were first described by Charles Hull in the 1980s, their medical use has revolutionised many procedures.
1The guides help to explain the surgical planning to patients, assist surgeons in locating the ideal position of osteotomy cuts, and reduce operating time.
