      Rob was born and brought up in the Lake District and had a very happy childhood. His mother, Dorothy, after a career working for the BBC in London and NATO in Paris had returned to her home town, Cockermouth where she met his father, Bob, a Quantity Surveyor. Rob, and his sister, Julia, some 3 years junior went to the local school in Lorton, where the whole school numbered less than 30. From there to Keswick school in the heart of the lake district.
