Safety of MRI scans in patients with radiofrequency identification devices

      A 40-year-old patient who had been released from prison under an antisocial behavioural order with a radiofrequency identification device (RFID) attached, presented to our department with a neck lump that required magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). We were surprised that the scanning department insisted on the removal of the device before the scan for alleged safety issues, which resulted in considerable problems for the police, prison authorities, and patient. This raised the question of whether removal of the device was genuinely necessary (Fig. 1).
